Headphones for group runs: hear the road, hear your crew

First, the club question, because it decides everything else: on a group run you need to hear hazard calls, cars, and the person next to you. That's why club etiquette everywhere settles on one ear out, or headphones off. The good news is that headphone design has caught up with that rule — the best running headphones now leave your ears open on purpose.
Open-ear is the running category now
Bone-conduction and open-ear designs sit outside your ear canal entirely — music comes through, and so does the bus. The honest trade-off: open designs have modest bass and leak a little sound at full volume. If your music taste is basically kick drums, you'll notice. Everyone else notices safety and comfort first.
If you already own earbuds
AirPods and similar buds are fine for solo running with transparency mode on — it pipes the outside world in and is genuinely good now. For group runs, run one bud and pocket the other, and check the fit: standard buds are the most-dropped item on any club route in winter, ejected by gloved hands and cold ears. If a run leaves you constantly reseating them, they're the wrong shape for your ears, and no firmware update fixes anatomy.
Sweat ratings, decoded in one paragraph
Look for IPX4 minimum — that's sweat and rain. IPX5–7 shrugs off downpours. The number that isn't there matters too: the first digit (dust) is usually skipped for headphones, hence the X. Salt is the real killer — sweat corrodes charging contacts, so wipe them down after soaked runs and don't charge them wet. Most "my headphones died" stories are really "my charging case drank my sweat" stories.
What actually matters, ranked
- Stability. If it moves at kilometre one it will drive you insane by ten. Hooks and bands beat friction fit for running, full stop.
- Battery honesty. Quoted hours are at 50% volume in a lab. Knock a third off, then ask if it still covers your long run. Cold weather cuts it further.
- Controls you can feel. Physical buttons beat touch surfaces, which read sweaty fingers and rain as commands. Volume you can change without breaking stride is worth more than an app's ten-band EQ.
- Sound quality — genuinely last. At conversation-pace effort, with wind and footsteps, the difference between good and audiophile is mostly imaginary. Buy fit; the sound follows.
Night runs raise the stakes
