How to choose your first run club

Here's the secret most people work out only after they've joined one: almost nobody is turned away from a run club, and almost nobody is judged at one. The hard part isn't being fast enough — it's picking a club whose day, distance, and vibe fit your actual life, so you keep going back. This guide is about getting that match right on the first or second try.
Start with logistics, not vibes
The number one predictor of whether you'll still be attending in three months isn't how cool the club looks on Instagram — it's friction. Be honest about three things:
- Distance from home or work. A club 10 minutes away beats a "perfect" club 40 minutes away, every time. On a cold Tuesday in November, that commute is the difference between going and not going.
- The day and time. If your Tuesdays are chaos, don't pick a Tuesday club and hope you'll change. Most cities have clubs spread across the whole week — filter by the day that's genuinely free. Weekday evening runs (6–7 PM starts) suit office schedules; Saturday and Sunday morning runs suit early risers and long-run training.
- The typical distance. Most social clubs run 5–8 km. If you're not there yet, look for clubs that advertise a shorter option or "no one left behind" — many run two distances on the same night.

Decode the pace question
"Will I be too slow?" is the question that stops most people. Some honest translation of what club listings mean:
- "All paces welcome" — usually true, and usually means the group naturally splits into faster and slower pods on the road. Ask at the start who's running your pace; someone always is.
- Named pace groups (e.g., 5:30/km, 6:30/km) — the most beginner-friendly setup of all, because you know exactly what you're signing up for and nobody expects you to keep up with the front.
- "No-drop" or "no one left behind" — the group regroups at corners or a sweeper runs at the back. Great first-club signal.
- Workout / track / tempo sessions — structured training, still usually scalable to your level, but a more intense atmosphere. Fine to start with, better as a second club.

Match the club type to what you want out of it
Clubs cluster into a few recognizable species, and knowing which one you're looking at saves a lot of mismatched first visits:
- Social crews — the run is the excuse; the coffee, brunch, or brewery afterwards is the point. Best for meeting people and building the habit. If the listing mentions a bar, café, or "hangs," it's this.
- Store-run clubs — free weekly runs from a running store, often with coaching. Well organized, welcoming, zero commitment, and a good way to learn about gear without a sales pitch.

- Trail groups — dirt, hills, and a slower, chattier pace than the numbers suggest. Different gear, different culture, wonderful people.
- Identity-based crews — women's clubs, LGBTQ+ crews, language- or culture-centred groups. If running with people who share your context matters to you, these clubs are often the stickiest of all.
Do one reconnaissance pass online
Before you go, spend five minutes on the club's Instagram or website (every listing here links to them). You're checking three things: that they've posted recently (clubs do go dormant), that the meeting spot in their bio matches the one you have, and what the group actually looks like — size, age range, whether people are chatting or racing. Twenty people smiling in a parking lot tells you more than any description.
Then just go — with two rules
Rule one: judge nothing on visit one. Your first time at any club is unrepresentative — you don't know anyone, you don't know the route, and you'll spend half the run navigating. Rule two: try two clubs before settling. Even if the first one is good, a comparison point is worth a week of your time. Clubs in the same city can differ wildly, and the second visit is where you notice what you actually care about — pace discipline, friendliness at the back of the pack, whether anyone talked to you.
Red flags (rare, but real)
- Nobody acknowledges new faces at the start — not even a "first time?" from the organizer.
- The advertised "all paces" run leaves the slowest runners alone on an unfamiliar route with no sweeper and no regroup points.
- Meeting details are perpetually wrong or last-minute — a disorganized club is an exhausting club.
- Hard sells: paid coaching, supplements, or membership pushed on your first visit.
None of these mean bad people; they mean this club isn't set up for newcomers. There's another one nearby that is.
