Best activity trackers for runners

"Activity tracker" covers three very different devices — screenless bands and rings that watch your recovery, fitness bands that count everything, and proper GPS watches. Which one you should wear depends on a single question: do you want data about your runs, or data during them?
If you want data during runs: it's a watch
Pace, distance, intervals, a glance mid-run — that's GPS-watch territory, and bands do it badly (phone-tethered GPS, laggy pace, tiny screens). The budget end of real running watches (Coros Pace 3, Garmin Forerunner 55) now costs what a flagship band does, which is why our watch guide exists. If you'll run with it, buy the watch.
If you want the wellness picture: bands and rings
- Fitbit (Charge line) — the default all-day band: steps, sleep, resting heart rate, built-in GPS that's fine for occasional easy runs. Best for runners who mostly want general health accounting.
- Whoop — screenless strap, subscription model, entirely about strain and recovery. Loved by data-driven athletes; pointless as a run tracker (that's deliberate — you pair it with a watch).
- Oura ring — best-in-class sleep and recovery in a ring; zero mid-run function. The stealth option for runners who won't wear two wrist devices.
- Garmin's own bands (vivosmart) — the tidy compromise if you're in Garmin's ecosystem but not ready for a watch.
The honest recommendations
- New runner, three club runs a week: your phone plus Strava is enough; first hardware money goes to shoes.
- Building mileage, curious about training: budget GPS watch. It also does daily steps and sleep — one device.
- Watch owner who wants deeper recovery data: add a ring or Whoop; that stack (watch for runs, ring for nights) is what the data-obsessed actually wear.
- Whatever you buy: recovery scores are weather forecasts, not commandments. The run with your club still counts on a "low readiness" day.
